high schools students reading habbits

Even before the student attempts reading the books, an important daily task is to read the newspapers. Whether it is the local home town paper or reading national newspapers online, developing background with current world events is essential for success in high school. Teachers often want students to write about topics that are in the news, so the better informed a student is about the issues the better prepared the student is for high school.

Poetry

Although poetry might not be on the top of the list for many high school students to read over the summer, poetry is actually superb for students to read for many reasons. Poetry sharpens students’ language skills and sense of word choice while at the same time providing concentrated examples of many literary elements. Select an anthology that has a variety of poets exemplified or another great way to experience poetry is online. Poets.org has a multitude of poetry that student can read over the summer, as well as having audio and visual clips related to the poems. Experiencing poetry is a great way for students to improve their reading comprehension before heading into high school.

Classic novels

If a student really wants to jump a step ahead of the rest of the class, read some of the classic novels that are commonly taught in high school. That way when the student comes across a class that studies that literary work, the student will be ahead of the students that have yet to read it. Some common classic novels for high school students include: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Scarlet Letter, A Separate Peace, or The Lord of the Flies. Any major works by American giants, Twain, Fitzgerald, Hemmingway, or Steinbeck will always provide a student with a good literary background before heading into high school.

Drama

Having a little exposure to drama before going into high school can provide a student with some background in dramatic structure and the elements of plot. While reading Shakespeare may seem a little out of a student’s league for independent reading, in can be a worthwhile experience. Reading Shakespeare’s plays can enhance vocabulary and reading comprehension. There are plentiful resources online that can help a person with understanding Shakespeare. If Shakespeare seems like an unlikely pairing, consider reading a play by Chekov. These are often short one act classics that can be read and understood in a short amount of time.

Non-fiction

Non-fiction can really prepare students for high school reading. Consider that most of a student’s reading will be completed in history, science and other content area classes. By reading some non-fiction it will prepare students for high school reading. Some good books to read include Undaunted Courage (Lewis and Clark) or It Was Never about a Hotdog and a Coke (1960’s segregation),

Contemporary Fiction

Reading anything is better than reading nothing, and summer is all about reading something for entertainment. Consider selecting some current fiction for some enjoyable summer reading too. A new release that teens might like is The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan or

Inspiration

Before entering high school students should read at least one book that gives some guiding principles for how to conduct themselves in high school and all the stress that they may incur during this time in their lives. Consider Jack Canfield and Kent Healy as a a good example that will help teens see high school as just a stepping stone to their dreams. Another good example is the Secret to Teen Power by Paul Harrington.

Cooking

Believe it or not select one or two teen cookbooks. Teenagers tend to get busy with school activities and homework and often don’t eat as healthy as they should. A couple good books include: Rozanne Gold and Phil Mansfield. With busy lives teens may not always have someone to cook for them and will resort to fast food. These two books will help teens learn to cook for themselves.

Biography

Consider reading biographies. It is through reading about the lives of others that teens often learn about life and how to deal with adversity. For the sport love a good biography might be Chris Volkmann and Toren Volkmann. There is a wealth of opportunities for reading over the summer before heading to high school. It can be for personal growth or personal enjoyment. Whichever the case, reading is important to fit into the schedule whenever a teen can manage it.

Best all-night snacks for college students

All-nighters are far from uncommon for college students. When you are working or playing into the wee hours of the night, then you might get hungry. Of course, you could munch on that pizza from last week that seems to be okay as long as you pick off that mystery spot. However, there are much better choices. The following are some of the best all-night snacks for college students.

Fruit

Fruit is a wonderful snack. It is good for your body, with many types containing cancer-fighting antioxidants. Many of them are very sweet, which can appeal to young taste buds. Many types are also inexpensive, such as a bunch of bananas. A lot of them are easy to eat or snack on such as a banana, apple and grapes. You do not really need to do much to prepare them, which is very good for college students. There are many different types, which are appropriate for many different taste buds. They also have many dried fruits such as raisins, dried cranberries and dried blueberries.

Cereal

Cereal can be a great snack for a student. There is nothing to say that it has to be a breakfast only meal. It is relatively inexpensive and filling. Also, there are many different types for people who like different things. You might want to look for the ones that are healthier and do not have a lot of added sugar such as Cheerios.

Popcorn

Popcorn is a great meal to snack on, as long as you get the healthier versions. One that is cooked in unhealthy oil and soaked in butter isn’t the greatest, however there are many different types that are very low in calories and fat. This can be good because you might be able to eat a lot of it if you have the “munchies” but not get a lot of calories or fat. You will find many different brands that you can conveniently pop in your microwave, which many people have in college.

Healthy snack foods

There are many snack foods that are healthier than the standard potato chips. There are different things that are vegetable based. You can often find these snacks if you go to the health food store or aisle.

When pulling an all-nighter, a college student might enjoy a great snack. There are many items that are healthy, delicious and easy to put together. Consider the above snacks when making your decision.

Grocery shopping tips for college students

You are finally off to college. There are many wonderful things about newfound independence; however, one of them is probably not grocery shopping. You may be so accustomed to having everything purchased for you that you might not know where to start. The following are some grocery shopping tips for college students.

Make a list

It can be difficult to remember all that you need to get when you go to the grocery store. Even if you go up and down every single aisle, you are still likely to forget something in the giant stores. It is good to have a list so that you know exactly what you need to purchase. One good way is to keep a running list going. You can keep it posted up to your board, on your computer or wherever is convenient and every time you run out of something you can add it to the list. In that way, you will remember everything.

Become familiar with the grocery store

It can take much longer to purchase your items if you do not know where anything is. It might be worthwhile to plan a long shopping trip your first time out so that you become familiar where things are in the store. This will help you in the future.

Plan your trip

You will want to get an idea of the order in which you want to get your products. It is not just a matter of starting at one side of the grocery store and making your way over. First, you will want to be sure to get the refrigerated and freezer items last so that they do not spoil while you are shopping for your other food. Also, be aware of lighter and heavier items. You do not want to fill the cart with breads and cakes only to put a bunch of heavy sodas on top of them.

Look for money saving techniques

There are many money saving techniques that you may find useful. One important one that people have been using for decades is coupon clipping. You should look through them to see where you can save. Some stores will even double the coupons. Also, some grocery stores charge more than others (and quality can differ as well) so you might want to check out the different stores near the college to see what is right for you. Also, there are sales, which can be very significant as well.

Grocery shopping may seem like an arduous task, but you can conquer it. Consider the above tips when shopping for groceries as a college student.

students understanding about civics courses

Before enrolling in a civics course, most students will already partially understand some of their duties. For example, every student has probably paid a tax of some kind in their life (usually a sales tax). Students probably do not look forward to paying taxes anymore than do most adults, but they do need to understand that taxes allow the government to fund every program that it operates, whether at the local, state, or federal level. If students still do not like their tax burden, because they feel that it is too high, or that they will pay an unfair share of it, or that the programs it funds are wasteful, then they should understand that they have another duty—a duty to change it through political involvement.

Many people think of voting as a right, and it of course is a fundamental right of our people. However, people also have a duty to vote, although they often do not see voting as a responsibility. America’s system only works if the elected officials remain representative of their constituents. Unfortunately, as many as half (or more in some elections) do not vote, meaning that our officials only represent about fifty percent of eligible voters. The change that many people want never occurs simply because these same people never make it happen. For our government to truly remain loyal to the idea of “rule by the people,” then all of the people must participate.

A good civics course should also remind students that a citizen may have to provide military service. At present, the United States has an all-volunteer military, but every war since the Civil War has required a draft. Student must understand that their rights do not come cheaply, and that they may receive the call to provide the same sacrifice that almost every American generation has had to make to preserve those rights. A common comment that I hear from students has them saying that they would join the military if the country was attacked, but not for other types of wars. These students should be made to understand that besides World War II, we have never fought a war just for self defense, and that the wars to protect our economic interests or to hold the union together have helped to preserve our liberties as much as or more so than any defensive war.

Lastly student should understand Americans must forever support its government, or the government will cease to support its people in every way, including guaranteeing citizens their rights. In the American system, our leaders answer to the people. Only when the people recognize that they have a duty to restrain the government and to lead the leaders will this system continue to function. Without understanding the responsibilities of citizenship, our students risk exchanging government of, by, and for the people for despotism.
