Twenty-eight children and their teacher decided they wanted to obtain solar cooking ovens in Africa at a cost of $30.00 per unit. They decided to bring pennies each day. Of course, they brought nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars too. One second grader was overheard telling his mother that he had given $15.00 of his $17.00 because he wanted to help those ladies and girls to be safe. By the end of the one month time frame that had been set, they had raised enough money to buy five solar ovens! This idea can be used to raise money for any need.

Tried and true - These are tried and true fundraising ideas that have been successfully used for years. You probably did them when you were a child and they'll be around for years to come.

Garage sale - Another fundraiser that has been tried and true is a garage sale. A small school I used to work at made a couple thousand dollars in a little over one day with items donated from school members and others in the community. Top end items were sold at auction as were the remnants of the sale. To do this, it is important to have lots of volunteers. It is too big of a job for one person. Remember, organization and presentation are every thing. Be flexible with your prices. Another twist to the previous fundraiser is to have people donate items that can be auctioned on eBay. Every extra penny counts!

Higher Studies and Institutes

Many non-profits earn a good deal of their income from fundraising. It can happen in many forms. Here are a few to get you started:

Phone campaign - Have members of your group call all former members or interested individuals and ask for a pledge. Be certain that each worker fully understands how much money you are trying to raise and what you plan to do with the money. People tend to give more if there is a qualified reason to donate money to your cause.

Matching Funds - Consider asking a wealthier member is they would be willing to offer a matching fund to your cause. Then you can send letters and make calls letting others who are interested know that they can help double the offered funds if they, too, will donate money to your organization.

Puppet show or theater production - Organize a puppet show or theater production with your group members. Earn income by selling tickets to the affair. During the program, have snacks and drinks available for guests to purchase. If you don't have a puppet theater, use PVC pipe and curtains and you can build one for a very low price!

This segment will highlight some companies that have been excellent for the schools that have used them. An easy one takes little effort and, if you have a lot of participants, can create a good income for your charity or organization. Many known companies, such as Tupperware, offer fundraising opportunities. It can often be done as a book party and the customer has no question about the value and quality of the product. Grocery stores - Two of my favorites involve grocery stores. Every Fall Fry's Grocery sends a bar code to every school that registers with them. Pass the bar code around to everyone. The next time they shop at Fry's, they have the cashier scan the bar code as well as their saver card. The information is stored and every time they shop, the school is given credit. You can earn up to $1500.00 for you school.

The second store is Food City. They have revamped their program this fall and made it easier on the schools. No more collecting, adding and mailing in receipts. Members of your group receive a card similar to club member cards that can go on their key chain. When they shop, they have the clerk swipe their card and the point go to your account automatically. The points can be used to "buy" items your school needs. Last year we purchased a new computer with our points and had plenty left over for other items! There is no cost to you and the items are top-notch. New companies and ideas are forming every year. Keep abreast of the newest fundraising possibilities. Your school or non-profit organization will benefit from new ideas.

High School Time Management System

Golf tournament - Some activities take more time than others when you are trying to make fundraising money. Check these over, but know that you are going to be expending time and energy. The first item on the agenda is to coordinate your time frame with the golf course you will be using and the organization that you are helping. Important facts about golf tournaments for fundraising:a. The profit is small unless you get a lot of sponsors.b. It has to be fun for the participants.c. Make sure your cost per participant includes the green fees, cost of the golf cart, and range balls at the driving range.d. Gift bags are an expected part of the tournament and should include items such as golf shirts, hats, balls, tees, snacks, golf towels.e. Every course has an expert on tournaments. Confer with the expert.

Now, you've got your course, your date, your sponsors and your gift bags. What can you expect? 1. Look for sponsors for each hole for hole-in-ones. Put up an attractive plastic sign stating: This hole is sponsored by..... Make sure it doesn't look cheap. 2. Buy an insurance policy for par 3. This $400 policy will pay anyone who gets a hole-in-one at this hole a brand-new $25,000 car. 3. Look for sponsors for the tee-boxes at about half the price of the sponsorship for holes. 4. Plan a luncheon at the end. Have a nice sign listing all the sponsors. 5. When you advertise, give the sponsors a lot of free publicity. This is why they do sponsorships. 6. Rather than a cash prize, have trophies for the winners of the tournament.

Where can you get sponsors? Doctors, lawyers, dentists, car dealerships, business companies, anyone who is willing to part with some of their advertising money is a potential sponsor. Never consider a company too small to participate. You never know where their passion lies, and if they believe in your organization, they may find a way to participate!

Test Strategies to Pass the CBEST Test

In order to earn a California teacher credential, it is imperative to take and pass the CBEST test. It is not possible to teach at any level in this state, be it elementary, middle, or high school level, without having first passed the CBEST, which is why CBEST study guides are important. CBEST preparation includes basic skills in mathematics, reading and writing. The one relief about the CBEST is that it will not be as detailed as many of the exams you would have taken in order to earn your professional degree.

Dyslexia is often frustrating and stressful for students trying to survive school. For those who have dyslexia, going to class, completing assignments, and receiving communication is often a hard and stressful experience. But by preparing yourself and creating a plan, you can overcome the disability. Here are a few dyslexia college study tips that can help you achieve academic success.

Tell your professors. By communicating your dyslexia to the faculty, teachers can be better prepared to help educate you more effectively. They can give you class outlines, avoid using sloppy handwriting, use larger print for handouts, be more audible, and employ other techniques to make your college experience better. Share your fears and frustrations. Many schools have programs that are specifically designed to help dyslexic college students, and if you have trouble with essays or tests, provisions are usually made to accommodate your needs. Don’t be ashamed or afraid to communicate that you in developing study skills dyslexia.

Fund Raisers Having Huge Expectations

For some children who live in poverty, the dream of a college education may seem to be nothing more than a "dream" to them. It is often the children from low income families who fall through the cracks of our education system. If these kids cannot recognize that there is hope for a future in the classroom, they will often turn away from school. Some drop out of school so they can start earning an income as soon as possible and others may turn to a more unsavory lifestyle. It is these kids that need some one to take stock in them.

"Take Stock in Children" is a mentoring program in Florida that gives these children the real opportunity of making that dream come true. They focus on students from low income families who have a sincere desire to some day go to college. They offer a scholarship to high school children (starting in the 8th grade) who agree to live up to the standards set by the program. Students have to actually sign a contract agreeing that they will stay in school, maintain good grades, exhibit good behavior, remain crime and drug free, and meet with their mentors once a week.

It is difficult for many of us to really understand the state of mind of a young high school student that comes from a low income background. The peer pressure from their friends to go in the wrong direction is often enormous and difficult to turn away from. Students from this demographic, who prefer to stay home and study, are the ones that we simply cannot let get away. We need to give them the opportunity of a lifetime, the opportunity of a college scholarship, and we need to support them throughout their entire high school experience.

This program is funded through individual donations, corporate sponsors and fundraiser events. Many of the largest corporations in Florida participate in the funding of his program. For those who cannot afford to give anything more than time, there is the opportunity to become a mentor. A mentor will meet with a student once a week from junior high school to graduation day. This is one of the most rewarding methods of giving, and I don't think there could possibly be a better feeling than watching your student pack up and actually go off to college. It is not a dream anymore.
